March 2023 NYSARH/NERHA Webinar: Leading the Fight Against Alzheimer’s Disease in New York State
Erica Salamida : Director of Community Outreach

410,000 New Yorkers are currently living with Alzheimer’s disease and that number continues to rise. It is the 6th leading cause of death with 1 in 3 seniors dying with Azheimer’s or another dementia. Underrepresented and underserved communities , like many of the rural counties in New York State, are disproportionately impacted by Alzheimer’s and dementia. Despite this, people living in these communities are less likely to be diagnosed with Alzheimer’s and less likely to access care and support services. Aging service professionals in rural communities play an important role in caring for these individuals and are uniquely positioned to encourage healthy aging habits, seek an early diagnosis and connect to critical resources. This workshop will provide an overview of Alzheimer’s disease, including the warning signs, risk factors and research trends related to healthy lifestyle factors and their impact. We'll explore the disparities that exist in rural communities around Alzheimer's and dementia and review the services offered through the Coalition of NYS Alzheimer’s Association Chapters. Lastly, we’ll explore the many ways you can connect and partner with the Alzheimer’s Association chapter nearest you.
